Everything about tuning Euro2, Euro4, Euro5, Euro5+ and electric scooters
Short advice: for Euro 2 scooters, you usually look at the CDI and variator. At Euro 4 and Euro 5 scooters, this often involves an ECU, speed converter or model-specific speed limiter. Always check year of manufacture, plug and ECU-type before you order parts.

Speed up your scooter: speed according to Dutch law

Dutch law prescribes that a moped may not travel faster than 45 km per hour, and a moped no faster than 25 km per hour. In the case of a 4-stroke scooter, fuel consumption can be significantly reduced. It is quite common that driving is more than 20% more economical. With injection engines this difference can be even higher.
Improved lifespan
Because combustion becomes more efficient, there will be less pollution in the engine block. This will ensure that performance remains optimal for longer. The spark plug and drive belt also experience less wear. Boosting a scooter therefore benefits its lifespan. An engine has to withstand a lot, especially in the 25 km setting, even more so than in the 60 km setting.
How does scooter tuning work?
There are various options for tuning a scooter. This depends partly on the type of scooter. Euro 2 Scooters are often only limited by a CDI and a variator ring. Removing the variator ring (usually not present on Chinese scooters) and replacing the CDI in that case, is sufficient to derestrict the scooter. (IMPORTANT: the limiter wire/pulse generator wire must be connected, otherwise the CDI will measure 0 RPM and think you are stationary, so the CDI will not receive a command to limit)
Below you can see the RPM sensor located in the red circle of the crankcase cover. The RPM sensor exits at the yellow circle and will connect via the wiring harness to the purple/white cable of your CDI. Below that, you see the sensor itself.

How does a CDI work?
A CDI (Capacitive Discharge Ignition) controls the ignition. The fuel enters the cylinder and is ignited by a spark from the spark plug. The CDI ensures that a spark occurs at precisely the right moment, optimizing combustion and performance.
A CDI also determines the maximum speed and is therefore often used as a limiter. There are CDIs available for a speed of 25km, 35km and 45km per hour. Also there are CDI units where there is no longer any boundary at all. And there are also CDIs with remote control, allowing you to switch between 2 speeds. For example between 25/35 – 25-45 – 25-65 – 32-45 – 32-65. All these different CDIs are available in our webshop. Check carefully whether you have a 10 or 12 inch wheel. Euro4 & Euro5 & Euro5+ tuning up scooter
Scooters that comply with Euro 4, 5, and 5+ standards (all scooters produced after January 1, 2018) no longer make use of a CDI, but working with a ECU/Speed converter module. Boosting these models works in a different way.
How does an ECU work?
The abbreviation ECU stands for Electronic Control Unit. This is a minicomputer responsible for injection and ignition in fuel-injected engines. The speed limitation of Euro4 scooters is controlled by the software used by the ECU.
There are various ways to tune scooters that use an ECU. This depends on the make and model of the scooter and which ECU is in your scooter.
There are six ECU brands: Dellorto, Rongmao, Delphi, Motion Rojo and Continental. With some models, it is a matter of replacing the ECU, and if you want to switch between 2 speeds, you must use a Speed converter for EURO 4, 5, and 5+ engines.

When using a speed converter, it is important that your scooter is NOT tuned up. If this is the case, it will first need to be restored to its original state. This system works in conjunction with the original ECU and will not correct function with already listed models.
The starting speed of the scooter will always be the speed at which the ECU is programmed. For example: did you buy a scooter and have it tuned to 45 km/h at the dealer? You then install a speed converter of 25 and unlimited. The result will then be that your scooter travels at 45 and unlimited due to the earlier modification of the ECU.
Speed converters are available in different variants where you can switch between:
- 25 km/h and 45 km/h
- 25 km/h and unlimited
- 45 km/h and unlimited

Euro5 tuning up scooters:

Speed Converter for Chinese EURO5+ scooters with Continental ECU
For many modern Chinese scooters with a Continental ECU, ECU tuning is not always the best solution.

Speed and Dutch law
The Netherlands has a number of strict rules that scooters must comply with. A light moped is allowed to travel a maximum of 34 km/h GPS on the dynamometer.
A moped is allowed to travel a maximum of 54 km/h (GPS) on the dynamometer.
Speed limiter
