Replacing a scooter spark plug in 8 steps
- Let the engine cool down. Place the scooter stably on the center stand, switch off the ignition, and never work on a hot cylinder head.
- Clean up the surroundings. Remove loose debris around the spark plug before unscrewing it, so that nothing falls into the cylinder.
- Remove the spark plug cap. Grasp the cap itself and do not pull on the cable. Carefully move the cap straight off the spark plug.
- Unscrew the old spark plug. Use a properly fitting spark plug wrench. Work straight and slowly to avoid damaging the ceramic insulator and aluminum threads.
- Compare old and new. Check code, length, thread, hexagon, and connection. Do not assemble if anything deviates.
- Check the electrode gap. Many spark plugs are pre-adjusted, but check the model specification. Use a suitable feeler gauge and do not force the electrode.
- First, tighten by hand. Place the spark plug straight and screw it in several turns by hand. This prevents the thread from gripping at an angle.
- Secure according to specification. Preferably use a torque wrench and follow the value provided by the scooter or spark plug manufacturer. Too loose can cause compression loss; too tight can damage the spark plug or cylinder head. Then firmly replace the spark plug cap.
